New Bedford River
That weekend we were alone again
so I asked what you wanted to do -
"I want to see cows in a river"
We load in the picnic and head
for Norfolk and play tapes
and sometimes talk
I find you rivers and cows
but not together, and you are
too polite to complain
You are scanning the map -
"What's a Hundred Foot Drain?"
I say "Let's go and see"
We toil up the bank to
a river in the sky
a bird-filled lake beyond
I glance at you as you
take it all in, your eyes
brighter than the sun on the water.
