Sonkana*

For Thabitha, in memory of Irene.

You come in your sadness
Half-way round the earth
And bring me a gift.

A tall figure with wool for hair
Wearing the bright dress
Of the Vendas tribe.

Your doll, and a Ghanaian drum
Shout their vibrant joy
In my dim living room.

We talk of the Thames,
Cathedrals and cats
Until your hands can wait no longer.

You sing and drum
A generous song of Africa.
The room fills with your light.

As you leave, I ask what to call my doll.
You think awhile, then give her your true name -
Sonkana.

Chrissie Williams, February 2004

*Sonkana is my friend's African name. When children attended mission school they were 'renamed' by the teachers; she was given the name Thabitha. I had known her as Thabitha until this moment.
